Iron infusions before surgery

Iron infusions before surgery

If you’re getting surgery and you have less than a month to go, it’s prudent to consider getting an iron infusion to keep your iron levels in the normal range (ferritin >100) because there is good evidence that surgical outcomes dramatically improve.

Having lower iron before surgery increased rates of post-operative infections, transfusions, and fatigue.

Because of blood loss during surgery, some people require blood transfusions which come with complications and risks as well as the need for a greater bank of blood donors, something we are perpetually in short supply.

Pre-operatively, if we use iron infusions, we can reduce the need for blood transfusions. We can also hasten recovery from post-operative anemia

We need iron for energy production. Surgery can be a very depleting event in our lives, especially when we are unwell. The literal power houses in our bodies called mitochondria need iron to produce their energy.

We should give them a fighting chance to keep the lights on.

Pre-op IV iron is that switch.
